    Electroneuromyography.

    Electroneuromyography (ENMG) is a neurophysiological study used to evaluate the peripheral nervous system. It examines the function of the nerves, the muscles, and the neuromuscular junction.

    Because ENMG is a complementary study, its results should always be interpreted together with a clinical and neurological assessment by the referring physician.

    What the exam looks like

    The study combines two complementary parts. Nerve conduction studies measure the velocity and amplitude of the peripheral nerves' response to short surface electrical stimuli. Needle electromyography records the electrical activity of the muscles through very thin, single-use electrodes.

    Together, these data localize a lesion with precision — whether it lies in the nerve, the root, the muscle, or the neuromuscular junction — and characterize its type and severity.

    How the exam is performed

    In the first stage, surface electrodes deliver short electrical stimuli to the skin to record the nerves' responses. The sensation is brief and well tolerated.

    In the second stage, a very thin disposable electrode is placed in the muscle being studied, recording its electrical activity at rest and during voluntary contraction.

    The exam requires no special preparation and no fasting. Please avoid applying creams or oils to the skin on the day of the study, and wear clothing that allows easy access to the area being evaluated.

    A eletroneuromiografia dói?

    Há um leve desconforto. O estudo da condução nervosa usa pequenos estímulos elétricos na pele, e a etapa de agulha utiliza eletrodos finos e descartáveis no músculo. A maioria dos pacientes tolera bem, e o exame dura, em média, de 30 a 45 minutos.

    Preciso de encaminhamento médico para fazer a ENMG?

    Sim. A eletroneuromiografia é um exame complementar, solicitado por um médico a partir de uma suspeita clínica, e o laudo é sempre interpretado em conjunto com a avaliação neurológica.

    Como devo me preparar para o exame?

    Vá com a pele limpa, sem cremes ou hidratantes nos braços e nas pernas, e evite roupas apertadas. Informe se usa anticoagulantes ou se tem marca-passo. Não é necessário jejum.
